
After the death of his father — a yakuza gang leader — 14-year-old Kikuo is taken under the wing of a famous Kabuki actor. He dedicates himself to the traditional form of theatre alongside the actor's only son, Shunsuke. The film follows the pair across decades as they navigate ambition, betrayal, and scandal, evolving both personally and as performers.
Kokuho dominated the 49th Japan Academy Film Prize, winning ten awards including Best Picture and Best Director. It premiered at the 78th Cannes Film Festival and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
