Courtyard Arts is delighted to showcase ‘Sam Made’ - new work by Sam Ramsay, a Welwyn Garden City artist who has spent more than 50 years nurturing her twin passions: creativity and animals. Her latest collection brings these together through thec raft of needle‑felting, transforming wool fibres into expressive, lifelike animal portraits.
Growing up, Sam immersed herself in arts and crafts, experimenting with materials and techniques. Alongside this ran a lifelong love of animals and their individual personalities. Today, she combines both interests in her detailed felted portraits, each created slowly and meticulously using a barbed needle to build up layers of texture, colour and character.
Sam describes the process as one rooted in care, patience and attention to detail, resulting in keepsakes that capture not only the likeness of an animal but the memories attached to it. A turning point came when she gifted a portrait to a friend and witnessed the emotional response it evoked.
Sam’s work is on display at Courtyard Arts from 7 July – 1 August.
