Three From Harlow

Courtyard Arts is delighted to present Three From Harlow, a new exhibition bringing together the work of three artists whose practices, though varied in style and influence, share a deep commitment to observation, place and the expressive potential of paint. Featuring Nicola Court, Evelyn Barry and Robin McCartney, the exhibition celebrates the richness of Harlow’s artistic community and the diverse creative journeys that shape it.

Working primarily in oil, Nicola Court captures the quiet beauty of everyday landscapes, often focusing on wide, open spaces and the subtle traces of human presence. Her background in photography informs her sensitive approach to composition and light, while influences from Matisse and Courbet can be felt in her confident handling of colour and form.

Evelyn Barry, a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, draws inspiration from her extensive travels in Scotland and from the Scottish Colourists, as well as Cézanne and Monet. After a career in teaching, Barry has devoted her retirement to refining her drawing and painting practice, producing work that reflects a lifelong engagement with landscape, colour and expressive mark‑making.

Former art teacher Robin McCartney brings a contemporary sensibility to representational painting. Now based in Harlow, he finds energy in the town’s vibrant artistic community. His work balances traditional line and tonal values with a bold, modern use of colour, capturing the life and movement he observes around him. With Cézanne as a guiding influence and an openness to newer artistic voices, McCartney continues to explore fresh ways of interpreting the world.

Together, these artists offer a rich and varied exhibition that celebrates individual vision, shared artistic curiosity and the cultural vibrancy of Harlow.
